Transplantation

For some individuals with advanced disease, transplantation may be the next step to help regain health. Currently, double-lung, heart-lung and liver transplants are the only definitive treatments for CF patients with progressive disease.

Lung transplant centres

In Canada, there are five institutions with lung transplant programs for people with cystic fibrosis. Located in Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal, each receives Transplant Centre Incentive grants from Cystic Fibrosis Canada. Services at these centres are available on referral from a CF clinic.

Financial resources are available to help individuals seeking transplants, which can help patients and their families with the financial costs associated with having to relocate and transportation.

Liver transplant

For information on liver transplants, please visit the Canadian Liver Foundation.
